Public Workshop on Problems at Work was organized in the Volgograd Institute of Management, branch of RANEPA

On November 10 2021, first-year psychology students participated in the open English language workshop "Problems at Work" and studied typical problems at work,  Telephoning Rules, some relevant grammar material, did  listening and vocabulary task in the interactive format. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Ekaterina V. Stepanova, associate professor of the Linguistic Department, VIM RANEPA.

The first part of the class was a reflection and in the course of it the students presented most commonly occurring problems in the work place and possible solutions including lack of way forward and training, absence of two-way communication and job-related accountability, low quality work conditions and facilities, ineffective employee recognition and inadequate job descriptions, improper company policies and inadequate dealing with changes, etc. The participants presented their ideas from two perspectives – from the employee and employer which caused interesting discussion regarding varying but similar priorities.

In the next part of the workshop, it was identified that in business and public sectors employees have to deals with clients` problems on the phone, via Skype, Zoom, Teams, Whatsapp, etc. So it was suggested to the participants to listen to the voice message and complete notes. The task was aimed at boosting listening skills and building up appropriate vocabulary.

Further on, grammar material was presented to students by the teacher. It was devoted to the Present Simple Tense, its main functions (repeated actions, facts or generalizations, facts or generalizations, etc), examples of use, list of non-continuous verbs and position of adverbs of frequency in the sentence. After the theoretical introduction, grammar exercises were done by the participants which clearly revealed the level of assimilation of the material and enhanced the acquired knowledge.

The next objective was to learn some vocabulary to make, receive calls and solve problems and well as to appoint meetings and to read and translate the text about business telephone rules. It is commonly known that communicating on the telephone is a very difficult task tor English language learners, the issue is the clarity of the phone call, connection, poor pronunciation and speech detects. The students discussed other problems and advice that should be given to those who just starts practicing communication in English on the phone and expressions which might be useful when making and answering a call.

At the end of the class the participants made up their own dialogues using the new vocabulary practicing business communication when make appointments, reserving  tables, discussion sick leave with the employer, etc.

At the end of the event, Dr. Ekaterina V. Stepanova noted that despite seriousness of work related issues raised and complex solutions to them, due to the interactive format of the workshop students learned some important business skills, etiquette and strategies to deal with problems in a formal "face-to-face" situation as well as on the phone.
